Design modelling for revit

  • Create a 3D topo surface and building pad from a linked CAD file: Link update CAD over time, while import no. Uncheck current view only (get 3d), position and place at and correct lines. Massing and site and use toposurface and create from import. Create buildingPad and pick boundary lines (trim). ManageLinks and remove CAD file.

  • Use massing tools to create a conceptual building: Create levels (annotation tabs). CreateInPlaceMass in massing tab and draw rectangles and CreateSolidForm. For subtract select the other option. On surface AddEdge option for apply different materials to the face. WallByFace, RoofByFace and in properties you can select the family.

  • Assign wall types, roof types, and materials: Manage tab and open Materials (new and asset browser if you search for another one). Modify and rename it. Paint (modify pane) to apply material.

  • Create a 3D view and render: Camera (view>3dview) and modify parameters. Modify GraphicDisplay options and search for shadows and lighting (presets). Render (down tab).

Design modelling for architecture

  • Create basic, stacked, and linear curtain walls: BasicWall (architecture tab) are walls that have a consistent top and bottom constraint. Only can be modified from the top or bottom constraint when using the attach option. It is using location line property.

StakedWalls is a system family that allows you to create one wall with at least 2 sub-walls stacked on each other. It is selected from properties panel in types selector. EditType you can modify (Name, Height, Offset, Top, base and Flip). EditProfile selecting one face (vertical and horizontal lines) for control the dimension and Trim (modify tab) the face.

CurtainWalls first you need to change wall type and then add CurtainGridadding vertical and horizontal spans. Add/Remove segments options. AddingMullions corner and GridLines options before selecting the type. ExteriorGlazing type of the CurtainWall and change type properties. Copy/Paste in level 2 (special copy). Curtain walls cannot be automatically embedded into basic wall types.

  • Create and modify roofs, ceilings, stairs, and floor openings: RoofByFootprint (uncheck delineate slope and add spline lines). ModifySubElements for modify spline lines and attribute and slope to it. EditType and check variable properties. Add annotation SpotSlope.

AutomaticCeiling or BoundingLine (sketching) and apply typical transform methods. Apply material from MaterialBrowser (duplicate and modify materials.

  • Create an enlarged stair plan using call-out views: Create Stair and play with handrail editing types. Create Shafts (architectural>openings) using basic shapes (modify tab) or Vertical for stairs voids.

Call-outs gives you another view given different scale or graphic view. Can be used in plan and sections.

  • Add column to a grid: StructuralColumn (vertical, slender, at grid) AtGrid place column in grid. In properties you can change the Base/Top Level/Offset. ArchitecturalColumn inherit properties from walls (you can add Structural to Architectural columns..

Documentation for architectural design

  • Create area plans and use a schedule: Rooms place inside inbound walled room. Check in Schedules (properties tab). RoomSeparator if walls doesn't exist. AreaAndVolumeCalculated (let you customice how the calculations are perform. Load selection set with Filter and LoadSelection. Area plans are views that show spatial relationship based on are schemes and levels in your mode.NewAreaPlan and check in Schedule (Schedule properties for modify) for calculate gross area.

  • Duplicate views and create and apply view templates DuplicateView (right click on properties tab) can use different visibility graphic overrides settings. CreateTemplateFromCurrentView (View tab) and modify scale, then assign to the view (furniture one). Dependent views used when you are working on a large project and you want to crop the view into smaller segments, duplicating views in properties panel.

  • Create a color fill plan Define and use area and room color schemes (view tab) ColorFIllLegend select SpaceType and ColorSqueme.

  • Work with object styles Visibility graphic properties, Lines styles, Line Properties in Manage.

  • Modify level and grid types Grid type in properties

  • Explore 2D and 3D differences 3d/2d text in grid, for delimit the length of the cut. (cut only the length)

Families for architectural design

  • Families categories and subcategories Categories > Families > Instances types. NewFamily from template (File). Inside the family editor FamilyCategoryAndParameter for control category and parameters. You can modify sub-categories in the visual graphic settings.

  • Differentiate between types of families. EditFamily or EditType (after select instance). Loadable families (furniture, windows, doors) and system families (walls, roofs and floors). Inside each family can be different types. ModelInPlace for unique families instance (not so frequent).

  • Create custom families NewFamily (file), modify a template and save with another name. Associate Dimensions to reference planes (alt+T ?). Align and lock with reference plane for modified it with the dimensions. VisibilitySettings when select geometry. The room calculation point tells Revit in which room a family is located.

  • Edit existing families AssociateNewParameter (properties>visible) and create new parameter properties, editLabel and get the correct label. FamilyTypes and create new type and check visibility. Visibility parameters can be used to show or hide an element. They can be type or instance parameters.

  • Detail component family Detail components are 2d revit families that can be placed in drafting views or detail views to add information to the model. Select the appropriate family template. Load and create a detail component family. Create reference planes and set dimensions. FilletRegion and LoadIntoProject. Add a detail component and define a repeating detail.

  • Discuss additional family parameters formulas Add references planes, lines and dimensions. Create geometry and associate dimensional parameters. Work with hosted and non-hosted elements in a model.

Drawing sheets for architectural design

  • Set up a sheet Sheet (view). Move floor plan into the sheet. Place a Guidegrid (view>sheet compositions) reduce it's size and place it in a intersection. Sheet Properties and make grid visible. Move the rest of the plans to the grid in the spot.

  • Add revisions to sheets RevisionSchedule sort/grouping and appearance. Draw schedules in the sheet and LoadIntoProject. Sheet issues/Revisions. Add revision to the sheet, RevisionCloud and rectangle tool for mark it. TagByCategory and select the cloud. Sheetlists (schedules) and add fields, drop down into sheet.

  • Prepare sheets for print and export

Collaboration for architectural design

  • Use worksharing Collaborate in local network or bim360. Create a central model after enable worksharing. SaveAs options worksharing. Worksets divide to-do things. Each one is define to one person (if not editable). SyncronizeWithCentral. WorksharingDisplayMode (button bar)

  • Link files LinkRevit (insert) CopyMonitor select the elements to copy in my project from a linked file. Check a model for interferences. InterferenceCheck is a way to check to see if elements from linked files clash with elements in the current file (collaborate).

  • Share coordinates Project base points should be established at the corner of an exterior wall, and on a grid intersection. Coordinates (manage) Acquire coordinate (from a file) and publish coordinates (for use the same coordinates in the next load file).

  • Work with project phases Select element and change the PhaseFilter in properties panel. You can use slit tools from split walls and then demolished it. Phases (manage) add filters, graphic overrides, and project phases. Typical phase filter setting for demolition plan is show previous + demo.

  • Design options Design options is used for develop, evaluate and redesign building components and rooms within a single project file. Assign, display and accept primary design options. DesignOptions (button bar) select elements for this particular design option.

Project management for architectural design

  • Use the purge tool PurgeUnused clean families that are not used in the project.

  • Audit and compact model Compact reduce the model file size.

  • Resolve errors and warnings Audit

  • Transfer project standards It transfers family types (systems), global parameters, libraries, material, styles, color patter, print settings. TransferProjectStandard (manage) can override actual settings.

  • Organize the project browser You can group, sort, and filter the lists of views, sheets and schedules/quantities to meet your needs. BrowserOrganization (right click in panel project browser). ProjectParameter and then organise by it (sort or filter).
